Clip Grip Lower Anchor Connector

Role:

Sam led the ergonomic research and industrial design from initial problem statement to final production component, as part of a new product development team.

Problem:

Installing and uninstalling a child car seat can be difficult, confusing, and sometimes even painful. A component like the Lower Anchor Connector needs to be comfortable and intuitive. Users must be able to clip the Connector around the LATCH bar in the vehicle for installation and unclip from the LATCH bar to uninstall. Very often, this operation must be done with no sightline, with the anchor strap under tension.

The hook couldn’t change, but as IMMI moved from a steel gate to plastic, the ask was: how can we leverage our touchpoints to make the installation and removal process easier and more comfortable?

Result:

The part has been tooled and shipped, and is currently in application on two child car seats with two separate manufacturers.

Physical Prototyping

What drives comfort? How can we create a surface that is intuitive for both push and pull movements?
